TIA Standards Improve Market and Technical Performance of Communications Systems

The Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA) represents the global information and communications technology (ICT). TIA board members formulate policies to be carried out by its government affairs staff in Washington, D.C. TIA also carries out activities through its Standards and Technology, Market Intelligence, Environment, and Marketing departments.

TIA is accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) to develop voluntary industry standards for a wide variety of telecommunications products. Standards projects and technical documents at TIA are formulated according to the guidelines established in the association's Engineering Manual. A standard that is an American National Standard must be reviewed every five years to ensure it remains current.

TIA's Standards and Technology Department sponsors more than 70 telecommunications standards formulating groups. TIA standards cover mobile private radio, steel antenna towers, multi function peripheral devices, satellites, user premises equipment, premises cabling (both copper and fiber), mobile communications systems, terrestrial mobile multimedia multicast, vehicular telematics, and healthcare.

To ensure representation for the positions of U.S. telecommunications equipment producers in international markets, TIA also participates in international standards-setting activities, such as the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the Inter-American Telecommunication Commission (CITEL) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).
